Sulphur Springs High School held their senior awards ceremony Tuesday, May 17. The following list of seniors received special scholarships to help them reach their future goals as leaders, scholars and professionals.

The UIL Scholar Award was given to the top ten percent of the graduating class who participated in UIL activities. Recipients include Emily Atkinson, Connor Bailey, Beau Bimmerle, Bailee Burnett, Addison Caddell, Dawson Carpenter, Litzy Chacon, Fernando Chimal, Jason “Luke” Dietze, Peyton Hammock, Juan Hernandez, Makayla Howell, Savannah Lilley, Reese Rabe, Shelby Ray, Ashley Rodriguez, Jacob Semler, Matthew Sherman, Kaitlyn Tiemeyer, Michelle Tijerin, Jadyn Vanwinkle, Joel Villarino, Jessica Yanez and Emily Zarco.

The National Merit Scholarship Program, conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation, is an annual academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships. The competition is open

to all U.S. high school students who meet published participation requirements. Scholarship winners are chosen on the basis of their abilities, skills and accomplishments - without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin or religious preference. The National Merit Scholarship was awarded to Valedictorian, Joel Villarino.

Senior state academic UIL Qualifiers included Dawson Carpenter, 2nd Place Individual for Copy Editing, State Champion Team for Spelling and Vocabulary and State Champion Team for Literary Criticism; Lani Horn, State Champion Team for Spelling and Vocabulary; Shelby Ray, State Champion Individual and State Champion Team for Spelling and Vocabulary and Allie Grace Woodard, 2nd Place Individual for Theatrical Design: Costume Design and 4th Place Individual for Theatrical Design: Hair and Makeup Design.

Northeast Texas Chapter 416 Air Force Association, Earle North Parker Essay Contest Scholarship recipients included Dawson Carpenter, $500; Lani Horn, $500; Makayla Howell, $500; Shelby Ray, $500; Jadyn Vanwinkle, $1,500 and Joel Villarino, $3,000.
