Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County law enforcement and fire department activity from 5:30 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Monday included:

Friday

7:27 p.m.: A 24-year-old man was arrested in the 400 block of Cranford Street on a warrant for public intoxication. Officer Zach Brown was called to the location in reference to a disturbance. The man was reportedly in the disturbance and was found to have a confirmed warrant. He was released from jail Saturday, according to arrest and jail reports.

9:32 p.m.: A 35-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested during a traffic stop at a Main Street convenience store on Van Zandt County warrants for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and driving while intoxicated with an open container. The man reportedly identified himself and advised he had a Texas driver’s license, but Officer Findley was reportedly unable to verify the information. Findley reportedly had dealt with the man previously and was able to use records to determine his correct identity. He was found to have the two active warrants and was taken into custody. The man was also charged with failing to identify as a fugitive. Bond was set at $57,000, and he was released from jail Saturday, according to arrest and jail reports.

Saturday

5:09 p.m.: A 58-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested in the 100 block of Airport Road on a charge of public intoxication. Officers were dispatched to the location in reference to an intoxicated subject. They contacted the man, who reportedly admitted to consuming an alcoholic beverage earlier in the day. He reportedly showed several signs of intoxication, including slurred speech and inability to maintain balance. Officers reportedly administered standard field sobriety tests, which the man allegedly failed. He was determined to be a danger to himself and others and was taken into custody. He was released from jail Sunday, according to arrest and jail reports.

1:15 p.m.: A 17-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested at the Sulphur Springs Alternative School on a warrant for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Bond was set at $5,000, and the man remained in jail as of press time Friday, according to arrest and jail reports.

3:09 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on State Highway 11 west. Dispatch noted lots of screaming in the background. The male complainant reportedly said his dad is crazy.

10:01 p.m.: A 46-year-old Brashear woman was arrested in the 100 block of Dabbs Street on a charge of public intoxication. Officer Zach Brown reportedly observed the woman walking on the wrong side of the road, stumbling and swaying as she walked. Brown reportedly made contact and observed her to be unsteady on her feet and have glassy eyes, slurred speech and the strong odor of alcohol emitting from her breath. She reportedly stated she had been at a nearby restaurant and had too much to drink. She was not clear where she was going on foot and reportedly failed the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. She was released from jail Sunday, according to arrest and jail reports.

3:12 p.m.: A 34-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested in the 300 block of Towne Street on a charge of possession of less than 2 grams of marijuana. Officers reportedly observed a suspicious person sitting inside a vehicle with the front windshield covered. They reportedly made contact with the man and detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Officers reportedly located two glass jars and a plastic container or marijuana inside the vehicle. Bond was set at $1,000, and the man remained in jail as of press time Monday, according to arrest and jail reports.

8:24 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of burglary of a residence on County Road 4778. A man reported that someone broke into the residence.

1:39 p.m.: A 53-year-old Chalmette, Louisiana man was arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 30 at mile marker 136 on a charge of possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana.

DPS Trooper Brittain Marlow reportedly stopped the man for an expired license plate. Marlow reportedly conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle due to the odor of burnt marijuana being present and reportedly located marijuana in the seat where the man was sitting. The man reportedly claimed ownership of the marijuana and was taken into custody. Bond was set at $1,000, and the man was released from jail Saturday, according to arrest and jail reports.

4:36 p.m.: Deputies responded to a call from a property on State Highway 19 south in Brashear. A woman reported her ex-boyfriend was stalking her.

12:53 a.m.: A 33-year-old Midland man was arrested during a traffic stop on State Highway 11 at mile marker 667 on a charge of driving while intoxicated first offense. The man was reportedly stopped by DPS Trooper Sorley for driving on the wrong side of the road not passing. He was also reportedly found to have an expired registration. Sorley reportedly identified the man and detected the odor of alcohol. The man reportedly stated he drank six beers before driving. Standard field sobriety tests were reportedly performed, and he was found to be intoxicated. Sorley reportedly observed several open containers in the vehicle in plain view and located two additional open containers that were cold and half-full in the female passenger’s purse. The man reportedly provided breath samples, which registered .148 and .151. Bond was set at $1,000, and he was released later that day, according to arrest and jail reports.

11:21 a.m.: A 24-year-old Maumelle, Ark. man was arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 30 at mile marker 130 on a charge of possession of marijuana. He was the driver of a vehicle reportedly stopped for an equipment violation. During contact, DPS Trooper Aaron Hanna reportedly detected the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Hanna reportedly located a plastic container of marijuana and a grinder inside the vehicle. Bond was set at $1,000, and he was released from jail Sunday, according to arrest and jail reports.

Sunday

12:39 a.m.: A 23-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested during a traffic stop at the intersection of Interstate 30 and Bill Bradford Road on charges of driving while intoxicated first offense and possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana by DPS Trooper Sorley. The man was reportedly stopped for failing to signal a lane change. He reportedly admitted to drinking before driving and had the odor of alcohol on his breath. He was reportedly found to be intoxicated after completing standard field sobriety tests. Sorley reportedly detected the odor of marijuana in the vehicle while retrieving the man’s phone and wallet and conducted a probable cause search. A small bag of marijuana was reportedly located in the center console. The man reportedly provided breath samples that registered .135 and .130. Bond was set at $2,000, and he was released from jail later that day, according to arrest and jail reports.

3:23 p.m.: Kevin Lee Gant, 44, of Hallsville was arrested during a traffic stop on State Highway 11 on a charge of driving while intoxicated with an open container. Gant was allegedly reported as a reckless driver in Winnsboro and was stopped by Winnsboro PD for driving on the improved shoulder where prohibited. Gant reportedly refused all tests with Winnsboro PD. DPS troopers were dispatched to assist since the stop was in Hopkins County. A trooper reportedly walked Gant to the patrol unit and reportedly caught him to keep him from stumbling into the road. Gant reportedly refused all standard field sobriety testing and stated he had limited vision in his right eye. The trooper was reportedly able to get Gant to perform two field sobriety tests, and he allegedly observed several clues and signs of intoxication. At the jail, Gant reportedly provided two breath specimens which registered .176 and .182. Bond was set at $10,000, and Gant was released from jail Monday, according to arrest and jail reports.

Hopkins County communications operators answered 514 non-emergency phone calls, 175 calls for service and 95 emergency calls. For the period from 5:30 a.m. Friday to 5:30 a.m. Monday, officers filed five offenses, issued two citations and conducted one inmate transport between facilities, one funeral escort, two special patrols and 39 traffic stops.

Twenty-two people were booked into and 20 released from county jail, which held 147 inmates at 5:30 a.m. Monday.
