Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County law enforcement and fire department activity from 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Friday included:

Wednesday

9:51 p.m.: A 22-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested during a traffic stop at a Main Street convenience store on a charge of possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana. He was stopped for an equipment violation and officers detected the odor of suspected marijuana coming from the vehicle. The man reportedly gave officers two baggies of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. No additional marijuana was found in the vehicle, but once in custody, the man reportedly advised he had more marijuana in his pants and retrieved numerous baggies from the back of his pants. The total amount of marijuana was 1.13 ounces, arrest reports read.

1:50 p.m.: A 64-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested at a location in the 400 block of Main Street on a charge of public intoxication. Officers responded to the location in reference to a disturbance. The man was identified and found to be the alleged aggressor. He was reportedly intoxicated to the point of being a danger to himself and others. He was released later that day, arrest and jail reports read.

2:18 a.m.: A 62-year-old Sulphur Springs woman was arrested in the 1100 block of Church Street on a charge of public intoxication. The woman reportedly left the emergency room against medical advice. Officers located her and reportedly observed she was emitting a strong odor of alcohol from her breath and was unsteady on her feet, exhibiting slurred speech and severe mood swings. She reportedly admitted to consuming half a bottle of Jack Daniels and smoking marijuana. She reportedly attempted to resist arrest and had to be restrained against the patrol unit. At the jail, she had to be secured in the V1 cell, arrest reports read.

8:18 p.m.: A 35-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested during a traffic stop in the 500 block of Texas Street on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was reportedly stopped for an equipment violation and was extremely nervous when speaking with officers. After searching the vehicle, officers reportedly asked the man to raise his shirt and observed a syringe sticking out of his pants. An additional syringe was located inside the man’s underwear. Residue from the syringes was field tested and yielded a positive result for methamphetamine. At the jail, a further search allegedly revealed an empty green plastic baggie on his person. He was released from jail Friday, according to arrest and jail reports.

Wednesday

9:37 a.m.: Kenneth Wayne Busby, 30, of Campbell was arrested on FM 275 at County Road 4732 in Cumby on a charge of possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance and warrants for expired driver’s license, driving with license invalid and speeding 10% above the posted speed limit. Busby was reported at 5:54 a.m. as a suspicious person, sitting under a tree with a flashlight, at the location, but Cumby PD was unable to locate him at the time. He was later located by deputies and found to have active warrants. During a pat down search, officers reportedly located a white folded piece of paper in Busby’s pocket containing a white crystal-like substance which field tested positive for methamphetamine. Busby remained in jail as of press time, according to jail and arrest reports.

10:30 a.m.: Justin Dean Cowart, 32, of Yantis was arrested at the Hopkins County Adult Probation Office for a probation violation on a charge of online solicitation of a minor. Bond was denied, arrest reports read.

Hopkins County communications operators answered 582 non-emergency phone calls, 111 calls for service and 48 emergency calls. For the 48-hour period from 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to 5:30 a.m. Friday, officers issued one citation and conducted nine inmate transports between facilities and 10 traffic stops. Thirty-six people were booked into and 29 released from county jail, which held 161 inmates at 5:30 a.m. Friday.
