Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County law enforcement and fire department activity from 5:30 a.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Wednesday included:

POLICE

Monday

1:50 p.m.: Two Sulphur Springs men, 19 and 21, were arrested during a traffic stop in the 100 block of South Moore Street on a charge of possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana. Special Crimes Unit officers Sgt. Scott and Lt. Estes reportedly stopped a silver Toyota Camry, driven by the 21-year-old, for a traffic violation. SCU officers made contact and reportedly detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver and a 19-year-old passenger were advised to exit the vehicle, and officers conducted a pat down search. During a probable cause search of the vehicle, officers reportedly located a small bag of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the driver’s side door. Both occupants reportedly denied ownership. Bond was set at $1,000 for each man. The 19-year-old was released Tuesday, while the 21-year-old remained in custody, jail and arrest reports read.

11:13 p.m.: A 60-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested during a traffic stop in the 500 block of Gilmer Street on a charge of no driver’s license. The man was reportedly stopped for a traffic violation and found to have no driver’s license. He was released from jail Tuesday, jail and arrest reports read.

11:44 p.m.: An 18-year-old Sulphur Springs woman and a 19-year-old Caddo Mills man were arrested near Bowie Primary School on a charge of possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana. Officers responded to a report of two subjects allegedly smoking marijuana in a white Chrysler car. They made contact and reportedly observed the man holding a “blunt” in his right hand. An amount of marijuana was reportedly located inside the vehicle, totaling less than 2 ounces. The charge was enhanced for both because the location was in a drug-free zone. Bond was set at $2,000 for each, and both were released Tuesday, jail and arrest reports read.

Tuesday

7:57 p.m.: A 29-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested during a traffic stop in the 100 block of Lamar Street on a charge of driving while license invalid with previous convictions or suspensions and without financial responsibility. He was reportedly stopped for an equipment violation. Dispatch confirmed the man’s license was suspended or invalid. Bond was set at $1,000, and he remained in jail as of press time, arrest and jail reports read.

9:27 p.m.: Two Sulphur Springs women, aged 18 and 21, were arrested during a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Broadway Street on a charge of possession of less than a gram of a Penalty Group 2 controlled substance. The women were the driver and passenger in a white Cadillac that was reportedly stopped for no license plate lights. Officers reportedly observed the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The 18-year-old driver reportedly handed officers a clear plastic baggie containing a leafy green substance believed to be marijuana. She was asked to exit the vehicle and if there was anything in her pockets. She reportedly pulled a vape pen from her pocket and advised officers it was a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) vape pen. The 21-year-old passenger also reportedly had a vape pen and cartridge containing THC. Bond was set at $5,000 for each woman, and they both remained in jail as of press time, arrest and jail reports read.

Monday

9:47 a.m.: Cumby PD responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle at a residence on the eastbound Interstate 30 service road. A woman reported two individuals walking near her bushes going through trash.

12:33 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a suspicious package at a residence on the westbound Interstate 30 service road. A caller reported his sister’s spouse is sending unwanted items to the caller’s house.

10:07 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of criminal trespass at a residence on County Road 1130. A woman wanted to press criminal trespass charges against someone.

4:30 p.m.: Douglas Paul Merrell, 52, of Sulphur Springs turned himself in at the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bond was set at $50,000, and Merrell was released Tuesday, arrest and jail reports read.

Tuesday

12:46 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of suspicious activity on North Jackson Street. A vehicle pulled in and parked down a dead-end road near a church.

4:47 a.m.: Deputies responded to a report of suspicious activity on State Highway 19 south at the Midway store. A caller reported a subject laying in front of the store who didn’t get up when the store opened. The subject was escorted off the property.

12:47 p.m.: Deputies responded to a residence on County Road 1444. A woman reported she came home from lunch and the garage side door, which is normally closed, was open.

8:42 p.m.: Deputies responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at a County Road 3366 residence. A woman reported a motorcycle was stolen out of her front yard an hour prior to the call.

Hopkins County communications operators answered 504 non-emergency phone calls, 103 calls for service and 50 emergency calls. For the 48-hour period from 5:30 a.m. Monday to 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, officers issued two citations and conducted three special patrols, five inmate transports between facilities, one funeral escort and 16 traffic stops. Fifteen people were booked into and 25 released from county jail, which held 153 inmates at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
