A Rains County man was killed on State Highway 19 before daylight this morning, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Gary Michael Bishop, of Rains County, was struck by a Sulphur Springs woman traveling southbound on Hwy 19 at approximately 6:10 a.m. this morning, according to DPS Trooper Moore.

Bishop, a sanitation worker, was performing his job at the location was crossing the road when he was hit, Moore said.
According to Moore, the collision was instantly fatal and Bishop was pronounced dead on scene at 6:23 a.m. by emergency personnel.

Rains County Sheriff, with assistance from DPS and Hopkins County Sheriff, shut down the road and redirected traffic until 8:45 a.m.

According to Moore, DPS is not looking at charges for the driver now, although DPS is still investigating the accident scene.

“You wouldn’t expect that with a trash crew,” Moore stated. “It’s not common.”

According to Rains County Sheriff David Traylor, “I've known him [Bishop] for many years. He was a good man.”
