The outside temperature might be in triple digits, but standing over to a 550-degree oven takes it to the next level.
The recent heat wave in Texas hasn't done any favors for Arturo's Wood Fired Pizza. Due to the big, main indoor oven being out of commission, they're working from a small portable oven outside in the summer sun with only a small canopy to shield pizza cooks from the heat.
"Without this smaller oven we'd been in trouble. But it's working great and we're seeing good business. I tell the people working the oven to stay hydrated," said owner Arthur Kunzman.
The oven, stocked with oak wood in morning, keeps cooking thin crust pizzas at a rate of five or six minutes each. Workers have time to get a breath of cool air inside and sit in the shade for short periods.
"People like that they can step out of their downtown offices and smell pizza," Kunzman chuckled.
The business is located at 221 S. Main Street downtown Sulphur Springs.
