At 12:56 p.m. Hopkins County Sheriff and emergency personnel responded to a call for a possibly disgruntled person in Como.

“Officers attempted to make contact, and when they did, he drew a weapon,” Sheriff Lewis Tatum told the News-Telegram. “Shots were fired, and the subject was deceased at the scene.”

Personnel activated trauma protocol, and medflight was on standby at that time.

By 1:04 p.m., responders told dispatch to cancel medflight as the subject was pronounced dead on arrival.

Tatum confirmed that the identity of the decedent is Jimmy D. Odell, 61, of Sulphur Springs.

Tatum also confirmed that HCSO deputies had been on-scene at the time of the shots fired that killed Odell.

Texas Rangers are currently assisting in the ongoing matter, Tatum said.
