Outgoing Vance honored for service

A new member was sworn in and audit findings were heard among other items at last Thursday's Sulphur Bluff ISD board meeting which also honored outgoing member John Vance for 10 years of service.

“Mr. Vance has been an integral part of the Bluff during his tenure,” superintendent Dustin Carr said. “We appreciate his service and dedication to the students and staff of SBISD.”

Vance decided not to run for reelection this year after his last son, Ryan, graduated from Sulphur Bluff as valedictorian in May. Vance's older son, Cody, also attended Sulphur Bluff and graduated in 2016 as valedictorian.

Cody Cockrell was sworn in to fill the vacancy, and members Donnie Power, Terry Goldsmith and Chris Bassham returned for another term. A term lasts four years. In reorganizing the board, Powers remained president, and Goldsmith kept his vice-president position. Zach Collett assumed the position of secretary.

The board approved their District Improvement Plan which highlighted updates regarding COVID precautions, expenditures for closing learning gaps and expanding technology measures and the addition of a police department.

In the principal reports, Yulisa Castillo and Gavin Scarberry were named the junior high and high school students of the month respectively for October, and Zandra Peyton was named October's teacher of the month.

Ten students are currently remote learning, split evenly among voluntary and quarantined students. That accounts for 7% of the district enrollment.
