An 18-year-old Sulphur Springs man was arrested at 8:21 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Main Street on charges of possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana in a drug free zone and resisting arrest, search or transportation.

SSPD Officer Norris was reportedly contacted by Officer Crouse who was working on the square. Crouse reportedly stated he had been approached by citizens stating the man was asking them if they wanted to buy marijuana. Crouse and Norris made contact with the man to conduct an investigation into the claim of illegal activity. Officer Crouse reportedly asked to search the man’s black backpack. The man reportedly consented, and Crouse asked him to sit on a nearby bench.

Officer Norris reportedly observed the man kicking off his house shoes and assumed he was getting ready to run. The man jumped up and began running away. Norris reportedly pursued the man and grabbed his shirt. The man continued to use force trying to pull away and break Norris’ hold on his shirt.

Crouse helped get the man to the ground. The man reportedly refused to comply with instructions to give the officers his hands while on the ground. He was eventually subdued.

The man’s backpack was checked, and a pint-sized Mason jar containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana was found inside.

The location of the arrest was within 1,000 feet of the ROC, which is a drug-free zone. The man was transported to the Hopkins County jail, arrest reports read.
