Local FEMA board awarded funds

The Hopkins County Local Federal Emergency Management Agency Board has been awarded $ $9,790 in federal funds appropriated by Congress to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these and any addition funds made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)FEMA under the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

Public or private agencies in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Local FEMA Board Chair Karon Weatherman at 150 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive Sulphur Springs, Texas 75482 or 903-885-1661 for an application. The deadline to return applications is Jan. 15, 2021

Under terms of the grant from the National FEMA Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must meet the following criteria:

• Be private voluntary non profits or units of government.

• Be eligible to receive federal funds.

• Have an accounting system.

• Practice nondiscrimination

• Have demonstrated the capacity to delivery emergency food and/or shelter programs.

• If they are a private volunteer organization, have a voluntary board.

Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. In the past, Hopkins County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds to Hopkins County Meal A Day Center, Hopkins County Ministerial Alliance, Hopkins County Community Chest and the Dinner Bell.

Hopkins County Local FEMA Board's selection was made by the National FEMA Board, which is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's FEMA division, which consists of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, the Jewish Federations of North America, the Salvation Army, and United Way Worldwide.
