The Northeast Texas Beef Improvement Organization (NETBIO) sold 4,244 head of pre-conditioned calves and yearlings at its March 19 sale held at the Sulphur Springs Livestock Commission.

It was an active sale with a lot of buyers viewing and purchasing over the Internet. A total of 969 head of cattle were sold to Internet buyers.

David Fowler, co-owner of the livestock market center and a member of the NETBIO board, said some first-time buyers attended the sale and kept the bidding “very active.” The market was good, and the cattle sold for an average of $802.72 per head. A total of 196 producers brought cattle to the sale.

The demand was very good for all weights of cattle, both heifers and steers, as 41 buyers, including those on the Internet, purchased all the cattle.

Internet bidding was on a new site on the Web and was particularly active throughout the sale. The new Internet connection is LiveAuctions.TV. It is easy to navigate and will be the site NETBIO sales will be selling on in the future.

Fowler noted that due to the weather, conditions were a little muddy, but the cattle looked “really good.”

“The producers are doing a great job of getting their cattle ready for the sale,” he said.

The next sale will be held at the Sulphur Springs Livestock Auction Friday, May 21. The weaning deadline for calves consigned to that sale was March 21, and the last date for booster shots is April 21. That sale will be followed by sales on July 16 and Sept. 17.

Fowler said a lot of tags are already going out for the May sale.

“If producers have cattle that will be ready for this sale, I would encourage them to call our office any time for tags,” he said. That telephone number is 903-885-2455.

NETBIO holds eight pre-conditioned calf sales per year, which is the marketing arm for members of the organization.

The NETBIO Pre-Conditioned Stocker and Feeder Calf Sale allows producers a market to offer their pre-conditioned calves and yearlings in load lot quantities.
