Hopkins County Fall Festival’s popular event is back: Decorated hay bales are about to take over the landscape for the third year in a row.

Individuals, families, businesses, schools, churches and group organizations such as 4H clubs and FFA chapters are encouraged to enter. Any Hopkins county citizen can participate, according to event organizer Shirley Patchen.

The hay bale sculpture contest has two categories: single bale category, for just one round bale with or without square bales, or multiple bale category, for more than one round bale with or without square bales.

Bales may be decorated in any way the entrant pleases, but should not be vulgar.

Entrants may apply any material to the bales including spray paint, although oil-based paint is not permitted for environmental reasons. Bales can be placed lying on their side or standing on

end, and groups are welcome to put up signs for their organizations.

Additional hay and organic material is also permitted, such as loose hay, sticks or wood, cardboard and more.

Judging criteria takes into consideration visual appeal, construction, use of materials and creativity.

Entry forms must be received by Oct. 6. All bales must be completed before Oct. 16. Judging will take place on Friday, Oct. 16 and winners will be announced during the Fall Festival at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
