Despite rainy weather, grass fires kept county volunteer fire departments busy this weekend.
At approximately 3:43 p.m. Saturday, two callers in Miller Grove reported a small grass fire that was spreading near County Road 1118 with no structures in danger. Stations 20 (County) 11 (Cumby) 13 (Miller Grove) and 17 (Arbala) responded.
Then at 2:24 p.m. Sunday, three callers reported a grass fire near the church in Arbala. Stations 20 (County) 17 (Arbala) 2 (Como) and 12 (Brinker) responded.
By 6:30 p.m., one more report of a grass fire came in near County Road 1107. Stations 20 (County) 17 (Arbala) 13 (Miller Grove) and 11 (Cumby) responded.
“We’ve got a couple of younger guys that are really making the effort,” Miller Grove Captain Ray Sparks told the News-Telegram. “There are fires that happen at the same time in different parts of the county, and sometimes we don’t have the aid of station 20 to be on every single call. So, we’re proud of the ones we have on our VFDs. And we always need more help.”
