Hopkins County Genealogical Society is getting ready for their Fall Genealogy Seminar, this year both virtual and in-person.

John Sellers will be the speaker for this year’s seminar, which will include four sessions with breaks and a lunch. Snacks and drinks will be provided during the breaks. Attendees will be responsible for their own lunches.

The session presented at the Fall Seminar will be:

• Session 1—”Researching Your Ancestor’s Plot of Dirt: The Adventures of Courthouse Land Research.” A detailed study of courthouse research concerning land records. Using deed indices and how to access deed records to prove relationships.

• Session 2—“What Do You Mean It Burned? Is all your research up in smoke?” A researcher’s worst fear is to learn that public records have been destroyed. Get beyond the disaster and use different sources and skills for research. Various myths and fallacies are addressed.

• Session 3—”Women, That Gender You Can’t Do Without in Your Research.” This lecture features strategies to unlock your matrilineal lines. Importance of how research procedures may vary, but also how to track the females in studies of patrilineal lines.

• Session 4—“I Got a Match, What Now?” A look at shared matches with Ancestry as the primary source. This lecture gives you an overview of DNA terminology and how the different tests enhance genealogical research. The matching tool provided by Ancestry called Shared Matches will be analyzed.

Virtual registration ends at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. Anyone who registers for the virtual seminar will receive a link to the Zoom meeting in their email Friday, Sept. 18.

Registration for attending in person can be done up until the start of the first session, provided there is space available due to social distancing. Attendees will need to wear masks.

The cost of the seminar, whether in person or virtual, is $30.

The Fall Seminar will be held 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 in the Winifred Building at Heritage Park, 416 North Jackson St. in Sulphur Springs. For questions and more information, call HCGS library 903-885-8523 or email hcgstx@suddenlinkmail.com.
