First children's art contest gives awards

WINNSBORO – An awards ceremony and reception was held Nov. 4 at Culture Club Art Gallery for the first annual Winnsboro Children's Art Competition & Exhibit. The event is produced by the gallery and Winnsboro Center for the Arts. Children in grades 1

Children in grades 1 through 6 entered the competition with the theme “What I Am Thankful for in My Community.” Submissions included the topics of parks and playgrounds, a hot dog stand, an electric company lineman, Autumn Trails, the Bowery pedestrian plaza, the farmers' market, a moon over the lake, sparkles, and a very creative wonderland.

The budding young artists used paint, colored pencils, photography, spray paint, and other media to get their messages across.

Judges for the event were local artists: Shirley Gordon, Krista Ward, and Tom Rice. They based their decisions on originality, creativity, technique, and presentation.

Winning "Best in Show" and $150 is 3rd grader Hadlie Gilbreath for her painting titled, "I Am Thankful for Autumn Trails."

Winning 1st place and $100 in grades 4 – 6 is 6th grader Evan Medina for his painting titled, “Moon Over the Lake.” The 2nd place and $75 winner in grades 4 – 6 is 6th grader Aubrey Miller for her sculpture titled, “Winnsboro Farmers’ Market.”

Winning 1st place and $50 in grades 1 – 3 is 3rd grader Cheyenne Miller for her painting titled, “Thank a Lineman.” The 2nd place and $25 winner in grades 1 – 3 is 1st grader Julianna Garcia for her painting titled, “Playground.” Winning 3rd place and $20 in grades 1 – 3 is 2nd grader Bristol Bevins for her drawing titled, “Winnsboro Park.”

All participants received a printed keepsake book of all artworks in the competition and a certificate. Award winners also received a prize bag that included goodies, art supplies, and coupons from local businesses.

The exhibit continues to be on display at the gallery, 107 East Elm Street in downtown Winnsboro through Dec. 5.
