Weston Reynolds, a 2019 graduate of Huntington High School, was recently awarded the 2019 Dr. James Earl Kennamer academic scholarship by the National Wild Turkey Federation.

The $10,000 scholarship, sponsored by Mossy Oak, is given annually to one graduating senior nationwide who has displayed exemplary commitment to conservation, academic excellence and outstanding leadership skills.

Reynolds, who also received a $500 scholarship from the Pinywoods Chapter of NWTF and a $2,000 scholarship from the Texas State NWTF chapter, will apply the funds as he launches a college education at Texas Tech in Lubbock this fall. The 2019 HHS valedictorian says he will pursue a degree in agricultural communications and hopes to participate in government affairs. He graduated with a 4.0 grade point average.

“I primarily aspire to advocate for advancements in the agricultural industry, but also plan to promote a healthier environment for wildlife and the protection of our ecosystems,” Reynolds wrote in his application submission essay.

In addition to his academic achievements, Reynolds interns at a veterinary clinic, has a job in the agricultural field, holds numerous leadership positions and participates in a number of organizations including the Texas and District 5 4-H, National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, Huntington High School Student Council, National FFA, varsity sports, drug-free all-stars and Christians in Action.

Reynolds also attended the Texas State JAKES field day for more than a decade and is a member of the Angelina County 4-H archery team. The 4-H group has been operating the archery shooting station at the JAKES event for more than 10 years, according to Dale Bounds, a veteran NWTF volunteer from Lufkin.
