The 52nd Annual Hopkins County Dairy Festival kicked off with an opening ceremony, followed by a balloon rally later than night, before Saturday morning’s parade which returned to its traditional route. The start of the weeklong salute to the dairy industry included a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Guaranty Bond Bank.

Sulphur Springs City Council members Emily Glass and Freddie Taylor were sworn in to new terms on the council at their regular meeting, and the next bit of business called for the council to elect a new mayor and mayor pro tem. Glass was named to serve as mayor and Councilman Clay Walker was to serve as mayor pro tem for the coming year.

A crowd of approximately 200 gathered at Pacific Park to protest the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and to ask for “equal justice.” After performing voter registrations, the group was led in prayer by Pastor Ed Lantz of First United Methodist Church.
