Deadline to register to vote in May 6 elections nears

Early voting scheduled April 24-May 2 in municipal, school and special elections

All eligible Texas voters — including those who reside in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County and Yantis — are reminded to make sure they are registered to vote by Thursday, April 6, if they they plan to vote in the May 6 local elections.

Not all local governmental entities will be holding elections on May 6 —only positions on municipalities, school districts, and other local political subdivisions will be holding elections.

'If you are not already registered to vote in the upcoming local elections — there is still time! Make sure to submit your voter registration application to your county voter registrar by Thursday, April 6, so that you can have an opportunity to make your voice heard in your local community,' Secretary Nelson said. 'Remember: if you're already registered but need to update your address or other information, you can do it all online!

'All eligible Texas voters should to exercise their most sacred right by getting involved at the local level and casting a ballot in the upcoming May election, and that starts with getting registered by April 6!' Nelson concluded.

In Hopkins County, Sulphur Springs and Como City Councils have canceled their elections as the candidates were unopposed for the seats they sought. A special Dike incorporation and City Council Election has also been called for certain Dike residents within the proposed incorporated are. Sulphur Springs, Como-Pickton and Yantis school district will also each hold trustees elections.

City Council Elections

Sulphur Springs City Council had only two candidates file for a place on the ballot. John Sellers will serve another term on the council in Place 7 and Tyler Law will become the Place 6 councilman. Doug Moore currently serves and mayor and Place 6 councilman; he opted not to file for another term on Sulphur Springs City Council.

In Como, three places were up on the City Council, that for mayor, Place 1 and Place 2. The City Council earlier this month canceled the May 6 election. The City of Como will continue to be served by the current slate of officers for two more years due to lack of candidates filing. Although that term won’t officially begin until May, the oath of office was administered again to the mayor and two city commissioners during the March Como City Council meeting.

Special Election

A special election has been called to allow the residents of Dike to determined whether an almost 2-mile stretch of the community will become a Type C incorporated area. Only those residents who reside within the proposed incorporated area will be able to vote in this election.

While voting on the Dike incorporation proposal, Dike residents will also be asked to vote for their choice of mayor and city commissioners, which would only be effective if the incorporation proposal passes. The ballot asks Dike residents to choose between Drew Bell and Brett Lester for mayor. On the ballot for the two Dike City Commission seats are Betty Waters, Dirk Wessels, Lucretia Pool and Pam Harder.

Early voting by personal appearance will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays April 24 through May 2, in the Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Courtroom, located inside Hopkins County Courthouse Annex, at 128 Jefferson St. in Sulphur Springs.

On Election Day, Saturday, May 6, voting will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Dike Community Center.

Applications for a ballot by mail in Dike special incorporation and City Council elections should be mailed to Hopkins County Clerk Tracy Smith, who also serves as voting clerk, 128 Jefferson St., Suite C, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482 not later than April 25, 2023.

Sulphur Springs ISD

Sulphur Springs ISD, Como-Pickton CISD and Yantis ISD will also be conducting May 6 trustees elections.

In Sulphur Springs ISD, candidates on the May 6 ballot will be four candidates for two at-large full three-year term seats on the board of trustees include Wesley Cooper, Adam Teer, Darla Reed and Earvin Larry Jr. Incumbents Robbin Vaughan and Robert Cody opted not to seek another term on the school board.

In SSISD, all voting will be conducted at SSISD Administration Building, 631 Connally St. Early voting will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 24-May 2. Election Day voting will be conducted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 6.

Applications for ballot by mail should be mailed to Tax Assessor Collector Sandra Gibby, early voting clerk, at Sulphur Springs ISD Tax Office, 631 Connally Street, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482; applications for ballots by mail must be received no later than the close of business on April 25.

Como-Pickton CISD

Como-Pickton CISD had five candidates sign up for four seats on the school board, requiring a trustees election. Incumbents D J Carr, Brittney Smith, Jim Murray and Keith Monk are challenged by Danny Ireland for the four at-large full 4-year term seats on CPCISD Board of Trustees.

Early voting in the CP trustees election will be conducted at Como-Pickton CISD Administration Office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays April 24-May 2. On Election Day, May 6, voting will be conducted at Como-Pickton CISD in Room 114, in the front part of the building.

Applications for a ballot by mail should be mailed to Lenise Boseman, CPCISD early voting clerk, at PO Box 18, Como, TX 75431; applications for a ballot by mail or Federal Post Card Applications must be received no later than the close of business on April 25.

Yantis ISD

Yantis ISD also had two seats up for election on the Board of Trustees. Candidates on the ballot include Justin Glenn, Stacey Batchelor, Ryan Colby Ogle, incumbent Jennifer McKeever and Wynne Sellers. Jennifer Larkin currently is the second trustee whose term ends in May.

All voting is in the Yantis ISD Board of Education Election is scheduled to be conducted in the Wood County Annex, 200 West Bermuda in Quitman, including for residents of Hopkins County. Early voting will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays April 24-May 3. Applications for a ballot by mail should be sent to Laura Wise, Wood County Election Administrator, PO Box 970, Quitman, TX 75783; application’s must be received no later than the close of business on April 25. Federal Post Card Applications must be received no later than the close of business on April 25 as well.
