The Captain David Philips Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution met Saturday, November 14, 2020 at the Gafford Chapel United Methodist Church  with Regent Marynell Bryant presiding. After Regent Bryant called the meeting to order, the opening ritual was held which included the Pledge  to the United States Flag and the Pledge to the Texas Flag, and the reciting of the American’s Creed. Chaplain Gail Boles offered scripture Isaiah 41:9-10 and a prayer for the inspirational moment. 

Associate Member Charlotte Abbott presented the National Defense Report on Cyber Security which was taken from the November-December issue of the National Defender. Ms. Abbott also presented the poem “In Flanders’ Field” in honor of our Veterans and read a Constitution Minute. 

The minutes from the September  meeting were presented by Secretary Barbara Cockrum. There being no additions or corrections, the minutes were approved as read. Treasurer Debra Wood presented the treasurer’s report. The report was filed. 

Regent Bryant reported that 50 year member Sharon Harmon will be honored at a later date. All applications either original or duplicate must be on file with the chapter.  Member Michelle Arnold will be trying to gather these documents. Commemorative Events Chairman Jan Kimmel gave several dates of upcoming importance including: Kate Smith performed Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America” for the first time on November 11, 1938; “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” was written by Julia Ward Howe on the 19th, 1861 and also Lincoln delivers the “Gettysburg Address” at the dedication of the National Cemetery in 1863. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 and Lyndon Johnson sworn in. Barbara Cockrum collected items to be delivered to the Veterans’ Hospital in Bonham and thanked members for their help. 

Dena Loyd brought the program for the afternoon. Ms. Loyd became involved with Wreaths Across America after her son Chad was killed in Iraq. This program is meant to honor the lives and service of the Veterans who gave it all. This is Ms. Loyd’s third year of involvement and serves as Location Chairman with this organization. In 2018, 657 wreaths were placed at graves, 725 in 2019 and she hopes for 800 this year at Melhaven and City Cemeteries. The ceremony will be held on December 19 at the City Cemetery and the wreaths of balsam fir will be placed on the veterans’ graves. 

Refreshments were served by hostesses Debra Wood and Barbara Cockrum to Marynell Bryant, Elda Mitchell, Gail Boles, Patsy Bolton, Sandy Boyd, Sandy Noe, Michelle Arnold, Elner Pettiet, Jan Kimmel, Joy French, Gretchen French and Associate Member Charlotte Arnold and guests Twonette Evans and Dena Loyd. 

The next meeting will be the annual business meeting on January 9 with Elner Pettiet and Michelle Arnold as hostesses.
