DAR appoints nominating committee for new officers

The Captain David Philips Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution met Saturday, Jan. 11 for the annual business meeting at the Senior Citizens Center in Sulphur Springs. After Regent Marynell Bryant called the meeting to order, the opening ritual was held which included the pledges to the United States and Texas flags, and the reciting of the American’s Creed and the Preamble to the Constitution. For the inspirational moment, Chaplain Gail Boles offered Billy Graham’s prayer for a New Year.

After the welcome by Regent Bryant, National Defender in the January/February 2020 issue entitled “MIAP: Finding the Forgotten It’s The Right Thing To Do.” The Missing in America Veterans Recover Program is a non-profit organization that undertakes massive, nationwide efforts to locate, identify and inter the unclaimed cremains of American veterans. Many cremains languish forgotten and often unidentified on shelves in hospitals, nursing homes, funeral homes and coroner’s offices.

Secretary Barbara Cockrum read the minutes from the November meeting. There being no additions or corrections, the minutes were approved as read. Treasurer Debra Wood presented the treasurer’s report. The report was filed.

In the absence of the registrar, Bryant reported on several applications that are in process and prospective members.

Elda Mitchell reported on the commemorative events for January and February which include the Treaty of Paris ratified on Jan. 14, 1784; Martin Luther King’s birthday on the 15th but observed on the 20th; and President’s Day which will be observed on Feb. 17.

Members were encouraged to report service hours to Gail Boles.

No member expressed a desire to attend the state conference in Dallas on March 12-14; however, Associate Member Charlotte Abbott will be attending as a guest and volunteer.

Mitchell nominated Sandy Boyd to serve on the nominating committee, Barbara Cockrum volunteered and Michelle Arnold also will serve on the committee with Boyd serving as chairman. They will present the slate of officers at the February meeting.

The remainder of the meeting was spent discussing items on the Chapter Master Report which is due Feb. 1.

Refreshments were served by hostesses Bryant and Laurie Lewis to members Mitchell, Patsy Bolton, Pettiet, Wood, Boles, Cockrum and Charlotte Abbott.

The next meeting will be Saturday, Feb. 8 with Paula Altenbaumer presenting a program on Betsy Ross and Wood serving as hostess.

There being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
