Bond election proposal considered

Body

Cumby ISD held a community meeting Saturday morning via Zoom and Youtube, to discuss planning and a possible May 2021 bond election, which, if approved, will be held May 1.

The May 2021 bond package includes many changes to the Cumby ISD campus, including changes to the elementary, like renovations, a new playground and secure entry. The proposal also includes a new eating space, a conversion from the junior high/ high school campus to an intermediate school, and a new high school build.

The elementary school would be utilized as a pre-k through second grade campus, with the intermediate school housing third to eighth grade students.

The current proposal is set at a cost of $7,341,000, with the potential of growing to $7,941,000 with a possible additional project not listed, which is adding a finished track.

Taxes would be increased to $1.42 or $1.46; according to superintendent Shelly Slaughter, CISD is currently at $1.14.

“An example of this would be if you own a home that costs $100,000, your taxes would increase $18.13 monthly, or $217.50 annually,” said Slaughter.

With the higher rate, it would be $240 annually, or $20 monthly.

The proposal will be presented on Feb. 11 to the board during a special meeting. The last successful bond election was held 21 years ago on May 6, 2000.
