A group of Dallas-area activists plan to protest the Saturday, June 8 Hopkins County Dairy Festival events, claiming dairy industry’s treatment of its animals is “horrific and unnecessary.”

The protesters plan to dress in a Handmaid’s Tale theme “to demonstrate the comparison between the treatment and use of fertile women in the show and the treatment of cows,” according to a release.

More than 100 Hopkins County community members have posted in the vegan activists’ Facebook event, primarily in opposition to the planned event and to veganism in general.

City manager Marc Maxwell briefly addressed the planned protest in his city manager’s report at the regular session of the June 3 city council meeting. The report contains a picture of the published Face-book event banner with the caption “looks like we are going to have some visitors…”

Event organizers did not return a request from the News-Telegram for comment.
