Council formalizes EDC funding
The Sulphur Springs city council made two moves ahead on Pacific Park at their regular December council meeting.
The council heard a proposal from MHS services to complete landscaping and outdoor spaces for the park.
MHS worked with the city to prepare the grant for Pacific Park to Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD), community development director Tory Niewiadomski noted. The proposal from MHS came in at $98,605, Niewiadomski said.
TPWD allows for the total project to allot 8% of the cost to landscaping, Niewiadomski noted. At a cost of $2.2 million for the park, the MHS grant comes in at only 6.5%, Niewiadomski said.
MHS will provide architectural drawings, all work, and state inspection as well, Niewiadomski said.
No citizens presented themselves for comment on the agenda item. The council unanimously passed the measure.
The city also reaffirmed its commitment to funding the park by drawing up a formal agreement with the Sulphur Springs Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation for the EDC to provide $200,000 per year towards the costs.
“We know they’re good for it, that’s not the issue,” city manager Marc Maxwell noted. “It was brought up by our auditors. They’d like to see this done.”
“I do think this is a good thing,” mayor pro tempore Freddie Taylor agreed.
The EDC has already provided $200,000 for the 2019 fiscal year, city finance director Lesa Smith stated.
