Four city council seats are up for election in May, one of which is a special election for Place 5, currently held by Gary Spraggins, after the Sulphur Springs City Council approved to hold the elections Saturday, May 1.

Along with Place 5, Places 1, 2 and 3 held by Jay Julian, Harold Nash and Oscar Aguilar respectively are up for their general election. Nash and Aguilar were elected in a November 2020 special election after the May 2020 election was delayed. Julian was elected after a December runoff against Mark Bradley.

Those elected to Place 1, 2 and 3 will hold it for a three-year term. The Place 5 council member will finish out the remaining year left in the term.

Places 6 and 7 held by Doug Moore and mayor John Sellers were up for election last year, but because they were both unopposed, the election was canceled. They will be up for election in 2023.

Freddie Taylor, Place 4, was reelected in May 2019 and will be up for reelection in 2022.

The end date to file applications for a spot on the ballot is Saturday, Feb. 13. In-person applications can be taken at City Hall, or applications can be mailed to 125 South Davis Street, Sulphur Springs, Texas.
