MILLER GROVE— Miller Grove ISD held their regular October board meeting Monday. The board addressed a number of issues and thanked three members for their service, as it was their final meeting.

The meeting began by the board approving the minutes and bills of their Sept. 21 and Oct. 5 meetings. They also announced they will be moving their Dec. 21 meeting to Dec. 14 due to Christmas break, and moving their March 15 meeting to March 22.

The board unanimously passed a resolution to end distance learning, except for specific instances, effective Nov. 3.

“All students of Miller Grove ISD will return to their designated campus for in-person, on-campus instruction from their professional teachers,” a statement from the school’s website read. “Remote learning will remain available for a student who is the subject of a quarantine order issued by a governmental entity or on the recommendation of a healthcare provider.”

Of the 22 classes Miller Grove students have failed this year, 17 of those classes were failed by remote learners.

After passing the resolution, the board adjourned to executive session. Once returned, they discussed the progress made on their multi-use facility that is being built and mentioned they hoped it would be done in time to hold graduation there.

The board also acknowledged Coach and High School Principal Gary Billingsley for being selected as the 2019 Boys Cross Country Coach of the year. When asked, “How did you do it?” Billinglsey responded, “They ran hard.”

Billingsley went on to propose an idea that on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 30 they would host a trunk-or-treat for their students and have stew and chili for lunch, after having their annual fall festival canceled.

“We’ve got things planned, because we don’t want all the fun for the kids to be canceled,” Elementary Principal Jamie Fox said. “The kids are still going to dress up, and we may let the high school kids decorate their trunks and let [the elementary students] trick or treat, just let them have fun.”

The board ended their meeting by acknowledging three of their members and thanking them for their time served on the board, as it was their final meeting. They awarded member John Wildbur with a plaque for four years served. They also awarded both Doug Hall and Eric Mabe, who had each been on the board for 15 years.

“I enjoyed my time on the board,” Mabe said. “We are fortunate to have a great staff, a great group of students and a great community that supports the school.”
