2 arrested, charged with possession

Two Mount Pleasant men, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana at 5:05 p.m. Monday during a traffic stop in the 400 block of Main Street.

The two men were in a black Cadillac driven by the 18-year-old when SSPD Officer Sean Hoffman reportedly conducted a traffic stop.

Hoffman alleged when he made contact with the driver, he could immediately smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. He searched the vehicle and reportedly located a clear plastic baggy containing a leafy green substance believed to be marijuana underneath the gear shift panel.

Both occupants denied ownership of the contraband.

Both men were charged with possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana in a drug free zone.

The 19-year-old passenger also had an active warrant out of Titus County for possession of less than 4 ounces of marijuana. Bond was set on his warrant at $1,500.

Bond on the possession charge was set at $2,000 for each man, and they were both released Tuesday, jail and arrest reports read.

Woman claims suspected meth is ‘gag gift’

Rosemary Boone Cooksey, 63, of Sulphur Springs was arrested at a business on South Broadway Street on charges of possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance and a warrant for possession or delivery of drug paraphernalia.

At approximately 2:10 a.m. Deputies located the woman walking and stopped her for a welfare check as they reportedly had information she was a missing person. Upon contact, deputies reportedly observed nervous behavior. Cooksey allegedly changed her destination several times and would not make eye contact.

A records check revealed she had an active warrant and was not listed as a missing person.

Deputies asked for and were granted consent to search her handbag, in which they reportedly located a small white pill bottle containing a plastic baggy containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Cooksey reportedly claimed it was not meth and advised it was a gag gift.

The substance field tested positive for meth and later weighed in at .61 grams including packaging.

Bond was set at $5,000, and Cooksey was released later that day, jail and arrest reports read.
