Sulphur Springs and Hopkins County law enforcement and emergency services activity from 5:30 a.m. Feb. 3 to 5:30 a.m. Feb. 7, 2023 included:

Friday, Feb. 3

„ A deputy transported Jose Herandez- Morales from Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility in Mississippi to Hopkins County jail, where he was booked in on a warrant for violation of probation – aggravated sexual assault of a child.

„ A 32-year-old Commerce man was stopped by Sulphur Springs Police on Hillcrest Drive Saturday evening. A records check confirmed warrants for Sedrick Darnell Mercer’s arrest on driving while license invalid, failure to maintain financial responsibility and speeding warrants. Fees owed on the outstanding Class C misdemeanor warrants totaled $1,725.40.

„ Sulphur Springs Police stopped a Sulphur Springs man on North Locust at Connally Street. A records check showed Zachery Michael Bucher to be be wanted on two driving while license invalid charges, a speeding and an expired registration warrants. Fees owed on the charges totaled $1,727.77, according to arrest reports.

„ Sulphur Springs Police stopped a 29-year-old Sulphur Springs woman Saturday morning for a traffic violation. He arrested Montana Skye Hoffman on a speeding warrant. The fee owed on the charge was $408.50, according to arrest reports.

„ Deputies stopped a vehicle pulling out of a gas station parking lot on Main Street at Texas Street for defective license plate lights. The driver claimed he'd just left Dollar General. The driver and passengers claimed they had no contraband nor warrants for their arrest, and the driver agreed to let deputies search the vehicle. Passenger James Timothy Gwatney had a bag of substance that later field-tested positive for methamphetamine and weighed less than 1 gram in his wallet, resulting in the 58-year-old Sulphur Springs man's arrest on a possession of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance, deputies alleged in arrest reports. Gwatney too was found to be wanted for violation of probation-possession of less than 1 gram of a Pnealty Group 1 controlled substance charge.

„ Deputies stopped a Nissan Versa on State Highway 11 at FM 2653 for failure to yield right of way. A records check showed 25-year-old Hailey Lynn Michell of Commerce to be wanted on a Sept. 22, 2022 Delta County burglary charge.

„ Hopkins County and Brinker firefighters responded at 6:27 a.m. to a fire on Gaskins Street in Como.

„ Hopkins County firefighters and deputies responded to a vehicle fire on First Street in Como from 8:34 to 9:22 a.m.and to a fire in Cumby from 9:59 to 10:35 a.m.

„ Cumby Police and deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit on I-30 east starting at mile maker 101 on I-30 in Campbell at 5:21 p.m. and continuing until 6:05 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 4

„ A Sulphur Springs woman, 53, was accused of assaulting a 57-year-old family or household member. Sulphur Springs Police contacted Dora Jean Rogers and the alleged victim at their West Industrial Drive residence. Rogers allegedly began assaulting the male in the arm; he had a “fresh bleeding injury” to support the claim, Robinson noted in arrest reports. The woman was charged on a third-degree felony assault causing bodily injury with a previous conviction charge.

„ A Hopkins County Sheriff 's deputy attempted to stop a Toyota Corolla on State Highway 154 south near County Road 2174 for a defective license plate light. The driver slowed down, but continued north past Walmart, then turned onto Posey Lane. A state trooper joined the pursuit. The driver turned around on Posey, then continued north on South Broadway Street to Chili's parking lot. The trooper and two deputies boxed the vehicle in, then removed Quaylan Anthnony Marquise Brown from the driver's seat at gupoint. The 25-year-old Flint, Texas man was arrested for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle. A records check showed Brown also had an outstanding Smith County warrant for tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair, according to arrest reports.

„ Deputies stopped to check on a man walking on FM 71 west near County Road 4749. They'd been told two men alleged to have had jumped in front of vehicles. A deputy alleged he could smell alcohol emitting from the man. Deputies were told the Commerce men, 49-yearold Jason Lee Spurgeon and 57-year-old Donald Joseph Detwiler, were in a vehicle that had been driven off the road and got it stuck in the mud near Peerless Church. Deputies took both into custody on a public intoxication charge.

„ Hopkins County firefighters and deputies respopnded to a vehicle crash on FM 1536 at County Road 4613 at 2:44 and on I-30 west near mile marker 136 at 10:50 a.m.

Sunday, Feb. 5

„ A 35-year-old man allegedly admitted to the officers who stopped him on Interstate 30 near mile marker 120 that he'd consumed three beers before driving away from a party. A state trooper reported seeing several open alcohol containers in the bed of the pickup and smelled an alcohol odor. Edgar Almeida Gallegos failed horizontal gaze nystagmus tests and agreed to blood draw for analysis. After the sample was taken at the hospital, Gallegos was transported to Hopkins County jail, where he was booked in on a second offense driving while intoxicated-open container charge, according to arrest reports.

„ Deputies, firefighters and troopers responded to a vehicle crash on FM 3236 at County Road 3626 from 9:15 to 9:54 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 6

„ Deputies stopped to check on a pair spotted at Shooks Chapel walking around a SUV. A records check showed Vicki Jeanette Hall and Edmond Randolph Hall Jr., both of Quitman, to be wanted on Class C misdemeanor warrants. The 64-year-old man was booked into the county jail on Class C misdemeanor possession or delivery of drug paraphernalia and open container; he owed $719 in fees on the charges. The 56-year-old woman was arrested on theft, expired registration and failure to maintain financial responsiblity warrants. She owed $1,249.30 on the charges, according to reports.

„ A deputy stopped Ramiro Hernandez-Jinez. The 47-year-old Mineola man had no driver's license and was jailed on the charge, according to reports.

„ A deputy transported Kamira Lashae Wallace into custody at Pulaski County jail in Arkansas and transported the 23-year-old North Little Rock, Arkansas woman to Hopkins County jail. She was booked in at 4:05 p.m. on a third-degree felony hindering apprehension or prosecution warrant.

„ A deputy transported Montorey Jamall Johnson of Fullerton, Arkansas, from Hempstead County jail in Hope, Arkansas, on warrants for possession of 4 ounces or more but less marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

„ Cumby Police found 11.6 ounces of suspected marijuana and a handgun in a car stopped on I-30 at mile marker 120 for reckless driving. Jacob Ryan Rosenberg, 21, of Fort Worth was arrested on possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon charges.

„ Deputies contacted Mary Kathryn Fletcher while responding to a suspicious vehicle complaint on County Road 3504. The Quinlan woman was arrested for possession of less than 1 gram of meth, found in a cigarette pack, reports allege.

„ Billy Jack Harris was arrested on FM 269 on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge after finding a small amount of marijuana in a bag and a grinder, during a suspicious vehicle call.
