Local talent to be in performance

After an electrical problem with the fireworks last year, the 28th annual Independence Celebration presented by the Sulphur Springs Symphony League Saturday, June 29 will feature a longer fireworks display courtesy of a free line given by Pyrotecnico Company.

“We had a bit of a problem last year, but fortunately, the company pulled through to provide us and the city with more fireworks this year,” Symphony League President Sharla Campbell said. “We’re excited.”

Before the display, however, the Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra will perform with Dr. Douglas Bakenhus conducting. The same orchestra has performed several times at the Independence Celebration, and Bakenhus has been its music director since 2002.

“There’s a lot of local talent in the orchestra,” Campbell said. “People can be prepared for beautiful music in beautiful settings.”

Starting at 8 p.m. in Sulphur Springs’ Celebration Plaza on 100 Church St. in Sulphur Springs, the event is free to the public, and last year, thousands of people attended.

“It’s our mission to bring classical music to the children and to the residents of Hopkins County,” Campbell said.
