Attention runners, mudders and anyone else who wants to get dirty for a great cause!

The fourth annual Shadow Ranch 5k Ranch Obstacle Run is open for registration for anyone wanting to test their physical skills or wanting to have good, clean—well, muddy fun.

The event will feature obstacles like climbing a hay mountain (aka Mount Haymore); water and mud obstacles; crawling under barbed wire; flipping tractor tires; going under, through and over walls; rolling hay rings; wheelbarrow sprints; jumps and more. Some obstacles may require teamwork.

“It’s a mix of military-style obstacles like the ones I used to do, with some ranch items and obstacles thrown in,” said Executive Director Marion Cox.

If you don’t want to be in the race, come cheer on the participants as they try to avoid “George of the Jungle’s” inescapable mud pit or scale Mount Haymore’s prickly heights.

Last year’s event drew around 20 participants, which Cox said was due to having to reschedule the event because of weather.

“The first two years we had 50 or 60 people each year,” she said. “We’d love to have 100 people this year. If it’s storming, we’ll just delay until it passes.”

Proceeds benefit Shadow Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center, a nonprofit equestrian center helping children and adults with disabilities in Sulphur Springs.

Registration is still open for the event to be held at Shadow Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. Check-in begins at 8 a.m.

Registration fees are $30 for adults and $20 for kids age 8-15 through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. After that, the fee goes up to $45 for adults and $30 for kids ages 8-15. Anyone who registers prior to Sept. 15 will receive a T-shirt upon completion of the run. Be sure to provide your shirt size when registering. Registration is available online through Sept. 14 at https://secure.getmeregistered.com/get_information.php?event_id=131800 or in person at Fieldhouse Sports in Sulphur Springs. You can sign up there to get the lower registration fee and pay at check-in on race day. Registration fees are non-refundable.

Children 8 years and older can register to participate at the event for $5 on Race Day. They’ll receive a ribbon, wristband and cup, but no T-shirt. The discounted kids registration fee is not available online. There will be separate races for children and adults.
