The best and brightest of Hopkins County 4H turned out for the green carpet gala to accept their much-deserved 2018-2019 awards on Saturday. And yes, you heard that right—while the red carpet may be the place for movie stars, the green carpet is the place for successful steer-showers and broiler-chicken raisers alike.

“It’s amazing how hard these kids work and how dedicated they are to whatever they do,” Jessica Taylor, assistant AgriLife extension agent told the crowd of family members, 4H participants and well-wishers. “They have opened my eyes to all the forms of doing things. …It’s amazing to watch the kids work hard on their projects, and they are succeeding greatly.”

Representatives from age 10 and up presented on a variety of projects, from food challenge, consumer decision making, shooting sports, swine, dairy, beef, health and personal safety, public speaking and more.

“It’s not just plows and cows,” Braden Lennon pointed out.

Clover pin award winners are Kaden Mabe, Blaine Allen and Diego Childs.

Clover star award winners are Rylie Carroll and Ethan George.

Leadership pin award winners are Savannah Allen, Elijah Miller and Jorja Bessonett.

Blaine Allen earned the outstanding junior recognition. Rylie Carroll earned the outstanding intermediate recognition.

Savannah Allen achieved the gold star, the highest award one can earn in Texas 4H.

During officer installation for the 2020 school year, officers Geoffrey Stewart, Savannah Allen, Rylie Carroll and Diego Childs pledged to represent Hopkins County to the best of their abilities in statewide 4H activities.

“Every time I do a program, people in the community come up to me and tell me that it’s awesome how these kids speak so well, they conduct themselves so well, and it’s a great teacher for Hopkins County,” Taylor said.
