133 participants auction off animals

Area businesses packed the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center and pitched in an early total of $440,000 to buy livestock raised by local students during the Saturday auction of the Northeast Texas Junior Market Livestock Show and Sale of Champions.

The early total beats last year’s early number of $405,000. A total of $446,000 was raised at the 2019 show.

Nine different buyers purchased the Grand Champion livestock. North Hopkins FFA member Tracey Shackelford’s Grand Champion Steer, weighing in at 1,340 pounds, was bought at $5.75 a pound by 1st Choice Home Health, Hopkins/Rains County Farm Bureau and Highland Training Center.

Alliance Bank, Farmer’s Electric Cooperative, Northeast Texas Farmers Cooperative and Brian Toliver Ford claimed North Hopkins FFA member Kindal Shackelford’s Grand Champion Swine for $3,500.

Sulphur Springs FFA member Annie Horton’s Grand Champion Lamb was bought by City National Bank.

5W Contractors bought Sulphur Springs FFA member Parris Pickett’s Grand Champion Goat for $4,100.

Toliver Ford purchased North Hopkins FFA member Brody Weatheread’s $3,100 Grand Champion Poultry.

The Reserve Champion livestock pulled in some buyers as well. Rolando Massey’s Reserve Champion Steer, weighing in at 1,335 pounds, was purchased for $5 a pound.

Como-Pickton FFA member Brody Busby’s Reserve Champion Steer went for $3,400 and was purchased by Northeast Texas Disposal, Bell Concrete and Hopkins County Veterinary Clinic.

Hopkins County 4-H member Ryan Ragan’s Reserve Champion Lamb was purchased for $3,400 by the office of Dr. Phil Jackson.

The partnership of CHRISTUS-Mother Francis Sulphur Springs, Texas A&M University-Commerce School of Agriculture and Texas Heritage Bank purchased Sulphur Bluff FFA member Kaitlynn Harness’ Reserve Champion Goat for $3,300.

Jay Hodge Chevrolet bought Hopkins County 4-H member Micah Flemens’ Reserve Champion Poultry for $2,500.

Donors wishing to add money to their favorite exhibitors can stop by the Hopkins County Extension Office at 1200 Houston St. in Sulphur Springs this week.
