Hopkins County Tira News

No election will be required for the Tira City Council. The three incumbents, Allen Joslin, Mayor, Joyce Dodd and Janie Lewis, council members, are unopposed. The next quarterly council meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9 at the Tira Community Center. The public is always welcome.

Linda Jean Parsons and Buddy spent four days at College Station as “another grandkid enters college.”

“The family came from all over to get her horse settled and get her moved into the dorm room. It was hot and everybody was beat by the time each one headed out. It was great to see family, but a tough week. And you just know she had to be on the fourth floor with no elevators,” Linda said.

Dodd would like to invite everyone to the next Bible study at the Tira Methodist Church. It’s scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3.

We have a volunteer, John Steinsiek, who would like to put together a presentation for the next Tira Homecoming, which will be the first Sunday in July 2020. We are asking for photos from Tira—old photos of the stores that used to be here, from prior homecomings, any Tira photo that you would like to submit. John suggests school events, cotton crops and gins, storm pictures, highway and building construction, and other photos depicting the “history of northeast Hopkins County.”

If possible, please submit copies or send them digitally. If you send originals, please be sure to put them in an envelope with your name on it, so they can be returned to you. Also, we ask that you include a brief description of the picture.

You can send them to me by email or call or text me at 903-438-6688. You can send them to my phone, or we can arrange for me to get them. I really hope we get enough to have the presentation. Thanks in advance for your help!

Chip and I went to Hot Springs, Arkansas on Thursday, Aug. 15 for our granddaughter Jaidyn’s Open House at Lakeside Middle School, where she is a fifth grader, and our daughter Tiffany works as an aide in the library and other areas. We picked up our son-in-law, Perry, in Malvern, on the way.

After the event, we all enjoyed a delicious Chinese buffet. Jaidyn stayed with us at the Long Island Lake Resort. On Friday, Tiffany met us and we went to the Mid-America Science Museum. That evening, Chip and Jaidyn swam in Lake Hamilton, off the dock at the resort, while I enjoyed watching and relaxing, and then we played games. Tiffany came back on Saturday and swam with them, too.

After she and Jaidyn left, we picked up our friend, William McCauley, in Glen Rose, near Malvern. We went out for Mexican food and a scenic drive. We had a nice visit with him before returning home that evening.
