Sulphur Springs Police officers responded to a report of a possible theft of a wallet in the parking lot of Family Smiles on Gilmer Street in Sulphur Springs Tuesday. Officers stated in their report that the person to whom the wallet belonged claimed he had found his wallet outside the business and all the money that had been inside it—$3,037 in cash— was missing.

In the course of the investigation, officers watched a security video of the outside of the building, in which they reportedly watched a 52-year-old woman “pick the wallet up from the ground. [She] then placed the wallet into her purse and left the business,” the report read.

Once the woman had been identified, officers located the woman at her Sulphur Springs home, and she allegedly admitted to the officers that she had taken the cash. She reportedly “still had $1,307 cash in her apartment,” which she then allegedly gave to one of the officers. When questioned about the rest, police alleged in the report the woman “lied…several times” before admitting she had given $2,000 to her daughter.

She “was not able to get the $2,000 back from her daughter because it was already spent when she called,” the report read.

The woman was arrested on the charge of theft of property, more than $2,500 but less than $30,000.
