Claston Wayne Bearden, 47, of Sulphur Springs was arrested at the intersection of Bill Bradford Road and Gilmer Street at 6:39 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of possession of 1-4 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance.

Bearden was reportedly stopped for running a red light. Deputies allegedly observed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. Bearden reportedly appeared to be extremely nervous during contact and allegedly lied about his criminal history. He reportedly advised deputies that he had a pocket knife in his left front pocket when asked if he had any weapons on his person. The arresting officer reportedly received consent to remove the knife and allegedly felt a plastic bag in Bearden’s pocket while removing the knife. The bag allegedly contained a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. Bearden was taken into custody. The baggie was later weighed at approximately 3.27 grams, including packaging, reports read.

Bearden’s bond was set at $20,000, and he remained in jail as of press time Wednesday, according to reports.

Stacy Lynn Burkham, 47, of Sulphur Springs, the passenger in the vehicle, was also taken into custody. Deputies reportedly conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and allegedly located a glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine, along with a glitter coin purse containing a red straw with a crystal-like substance inside it. They also reportedly located a yellow baggy containing a usable amount of suspected methamphetamine, which weighed approximately 0.4 grams.

Burkham was charged with possession of less than 1 gram of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $5,000, and she also remained in custody as of press time Wednesday, according to reports.
