Perfect Beginning: Three SSHS teams go 6-0 in first week of 7-on-7 league

June 6, 2008 - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats opened up the Third Annual 7-on-7 Football League undefeated Thursday at the James Cameron Memorial Practice Fields.
The Wildcats outscored their opponents 189-115 in their six games as the varsity defeated Royse City 34-19 and Rains 52-13 in the nightcap, while the junior varsity defeated Rains JV 69-12 and the Como-Pickton junior varsity 34-20. Meanwhile, the freshmen team won 18-6 over the Mount Vernon JV and 26-6 over the Rains JV.
Varsity
Wildcats 34, Royse City 19
In the opening game of the afternoon for the Wildcats, All-State quarterback Tyrik Rollison had a strong game as he connected with receiver Shane McQueen three times for touchdowns, while back-up quarterback Colton Lee had a touchdown strike to Rollison for their final score of the game.
On Sulphur Springs' first play of the game, Rollison found a streaking McQueen down the left sideline wide open for a 45-yard touchdown. Rollison then found Jace Jackson in the back of the end zone for the PAT conversion and a 7-0 lead.
After two straight scores from Royse City All-State quarterback Richard Morrison gave the Bulldogs a 13-7 lead, the duo of McQueen and Rollison connected for their second touchdown and a 14-13 halftime lead.
In the second half, Rollison opened up the scoring with a touchdown strike to Jackson. The duo then connected on the PAT for the 21-13 lead.
After a Royse City touchdown cut the Wildcats' lead to two points at 21-19, McQueen and Rollison connected on their third touchdown of the game. Lee then put the game away with a touchdown to Rollison and the PAT by Anthony Mills.
The two teams will meet again at 4 p.m. on June 19.
Sulphur Springs 52, Rains 13
In the nightcap for the varsity, Rollison threw touchdown passes to four different receivers. Backup quarterback Lee had three touchdowns of his own with two of those scores coming courtesy of Garrett Ferguson.
Ferguson had three touchdown receptions, while McQueen and Ben Barrows had a touchdown each in the game.
Defensively, the Wildcats had interceptions from Darrell Franklin and Bryant “Day Day” Jackson returned for touchdowns.
The Wildcats held a 33-13 led at the intermission after jumping out to a quick 25-0 lead on the first four possessions of the game.
On the final play of the game, Jackson scored as he stepped in front of a Rains pass and ran it in for 20 yards.
Junior Varsity
Sulphur Springs 34, CP JV 20
Quarterback Trip Reeves had five touchdown passes for the Wildcats in their win over Como-Pickton.
On the opening series of the game, CP quarterback Lance Tate drove the Eagles down the field and threw a touchdown strike to Hunter Cooksey to give Como-Pickton the early 6-0 lead.
The Wildcats then went on an offensive outburst as they outscored CP, 26-0, on two touchdown passes to Sharard Timmons and a touchdown each to Alvin Frazier and Irvin Alexander.
The Eagles then cut the deficit to 12 points at 26-14 on a touchdown and two-point conversion but could not get any closer as Reeves found Dallin Sant for a touchdown and a 34-14 lead on the conversion by Frazier.
Freshmen
Sulphur Springs 18, Mount Vernon 6
Sulphur Springs came away with its first win of league play in a hard-fought match with the Mount Vernon Tigers as SSHS held a 12-6 lead at the intermission.
Quarterback Justin Owens and Blake Macek combined for three touchdown in the game with two of the scores going to receiver Cody Clayton and the other score coming courtesy of Kris Ford.
In the first half, Clayton was able to get past a Mount Vernon defender down the left sideline for the early 6-0 lead and then Ford scored his touchdown with another breakaway run into the end zone.
In the second half, Owens found Clayton on a crossing route and then Clayton faked out not one but two Tigers defenders for his second score of the game and an 18-6 lead.
