Spring cleaning projects in city, county end Saturday

Both the city of Sulphur Springs' Spring Clean-Up and Hopkins County's Community Clean-Up will end on Saturday.

The programs allow area residents to dump oversized trash and junk, including old appliances, that they'd otherwise have to pay a commerical hauler to get rid of.

At the city’s annual spring clean-up, city residents can drop off all of their rubbish, green waste and other junk at the dump site east of Flowserve on the Interstate 30 frontage road. They will not accept household hazardous waste — no chemicals, paint or batteries. Tires and appliances which use refrigerant also will be turned away. Proof of city residence, such as a utility bill or a driver's license, will be required to dump at the site. The collection point will be open Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Tires and appliances like refrigerators can be dropped off at any of the county's four dump sites, however, and one in particular will also accept hazardous chemicals.

Each of the county's four commissioners have set up trash collection sites in their respective precincts. All will accept tires and appliances, including those using refrigerants such as freon, although there is generally a limit of 20 tires per person.

Any county citizen — including those living inside the city limits of Sulphur Springs — can take their junk to any of the four collection points.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Burke Bullock's site east of Como will also be accepting hazardous waste, including pesticides and paint.

The four county collection sites,  the times they will be open and the types of waste they will accept are:

Precinct 1 (Commissioner Beth Wisenbaker): Precinct 1 Barn, State Highway 19, five miles south of I-30 (Shirley community); open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; accepts trash, appliances and tires only.

Precinct 2 (Commissioner Burke Bullock): Precinct 2 Barn, two miles east of Como on State Highway 11 (about halfway between Como and Como-Pickton school); enter at the west entrance; open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; accepts all trash, as well as liquid waste (herbicides, pesticides, paint, etc.).

Precinct 3 (Commissioner Don Patterson): Precinct 3 Barn on County Road 3564, 1/4 mile west of FM 69 (Dike community); 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; accepts trash, appliances and tires only.

Precinct 4 (Commissioner Danny Evans): Precinct Barn on FM 2563, two miles south of  State Highway 11 west (about halfway between Brashear and Ridgeway); 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; accepts trash, appliances and tires only.
