Cumby student heads to UIL regionals

Apr. 11, 2007 - Cumby High School will be represented by Chris Stubblefield at the Regional University Interscholastic League meet this weekend in Nacogdoches.

Several Cumby High School students placed at the district UIL competition held March 29 at North Hopkins High School, but only one, Chris Stubblefield, will be going to Nacogdoches this weekend for regionals. Stubblefield was one of nine students recognized for their individual finishes at the district meet, and the only student from CHS to place in more than one individual contest. Two teams from the school also earned second place honors at district.

Stubblefield placed second in literary criticism and third in social studies, scores high enough to ensure he advances to the regional contest at Stephen F. Austin University April 13-14. 

He was also a member of the second place literary criticism team which included Jeffery Smith and Colton Bullock. Smith was recognized for his fourth place individual finish in literary criticism.

The second place spelling and vocabulary team included Hannah Clark, Amanda Barrow, Zach Emmons and Dustin Smith. Smith was also recognized for placing fifth in headline writing.

Michael Cross was honored for his fourth place finish in mathematics.

The three other students recognized for their fifth place rankings were James Bivins, persuasive speaking; Lucia Pharr, ready writing; Jessica Shirley, prose interpretation.

Two students were recognized for their sixth place finishes. Candy Hart took sixth place in news writing and Brooke Goode received sixth in informative speaking.

The Conference 1A District 20 Academic UIL Springs Meet was held at North Hopkins school on March 29. Nine schools competed at the event.
